LMS Reinforcing Steel Group is the leading independent fabricator and installer of reinforcing steel in North America. They build superstructures — bridges, stadiums, commercial towers, residential high-rises — in one of construction’s most dangerous sectors.
With 600 employees and 25 subcontractors generating an average of 250 forms per day, their safety documentation burden was enormous. And paper wasn’t cutting it.
Operational safety turns field work into usable proof.
Two-day audits and a safety team stuck at desks
Ben Sleeman, Director of Safety for North America, knew what every safety director eventually figures out: you can't run a modern safety program on paper and expect to prove it to a COR auditor.
Filing replaced mentoring
The time the safety team should have spent in the field — coaching, observing, intervening — was consumed by paperwork. Filing, tracking, and compiling documents became the job instead of the means.
A six-figure rebate at risk
COR auditors allotted two full days just for document review. The 5% premium rebate — worth hundreds of thousands for a contractor LMS's size — was at risk because paper couldn't prove the work was done.
A platform rebar workers actually adopted on the deck
Built for the field, not the desk
LMS didn't just need a digital form tool — every vendor offers that. They needed a platform their field workers — people who fabricate and install rebar, not people who sit at desks — would actually adopt. A platform that worked in the environments where reinforcing steel gets installed: deep foundations, elevated decks, remote bridge sites.
Real-time data, both directions
They needed the data to flow back to the office in real time, not in a filing cabinet at the end of the month. SALUS delivered on both sides. The field adopted the tool because it was built for the field — intuitive, fast, worked offline, auto-saved every keystroke.
COR audits became a formality
The office got real-time dashboards, instant access to every form across every site, and analytics that made COR audits a formality instead of a fire drill.

- 01offline mode
Offline-First Architecture
LMS crews work on bridge decks and in foundation pits where cellular signal doesn’t exist. SALUS auto-saves every keystroke locally and syncs the moment signal appears. No save button. No lost data. Full functionality with zero connectivity — because rebar workers don’t get to choose where the pour happens.

COR Compliance Dashboard
Two COR audits a year across multiple provinces. SALUS’s compliance tab lets LMS verify documentation thresholds — FLHA completion rates, toolbox talk frequency, training currency — in minutes instead of days. The data that used to take a full-time admin to compile now generates itself.

- 03digital forms
Smart Digital Forms with Conditional Logic
Forms that skip irrelevant sections automatically based on task type and location. A rebar worker doing a daily hazard assessment sees only what’s relevant to their scope. Fewer taps, faster completion, higher adoption — which is how you get a workforce that actually creates the data.

Certificate Management with Training Blocks
Expired certs block access to high-risk permits automatically. When a worker’s fall protection or confined space training lapses, the system doesn’t send an email — it prevents the signature. The loop closes itself.

More from Ben Sleeman
COR audits have an incentive program and if awarded they give you back 5% of your workplace premiums, which for a company of our size, — it’s 100,000’s of dollars. With paper, just to review the process, they would allot two days for documentation review and you could never guarantee the accuracy. With digital, I did documentation review in 1 hour and 45 minutes and with more accuracy, guaranteeing to get the 5% back which is incredible.
Me and my team have the bandwidth to actually focus on safety now that we’re not constantly being bogged down in paperwork.
The savings are substantial. For a company our size, we would’ve needed 3 personal assistants to do what we’re doing now with the program digitally — that’s a savings of $180K a year in salaries. That’s not even taking in account what we’re saving on paper, printing, etc.
