## 29 CFR 1926 (OSHA) walking/working surface, shall be protected from falling by the use of a guardrail system, a safety net system, or a personal fall arrest system. - (15) Walking/working surfaces not otherwise addressed. Except as provided in §1926.500(a)(2) or in §1926.501 (b)(1) through (b)(14), each employee on a walking/working surface 6 feet (1.8 m) or more above lower levels shall be protected from falling by a guardrail system, safety net system, or personal fall arrest system. - (c) Protection from falling objects. When an employee is exposed to falling objects, the employer shall have each employee wear a hard hat and shall implement one of the following measures: - (1) Erect toeboards, screens, or guardrail systems to prevent objects from falling from higher levels; or, - (2) Erect a canopy structure and keep potential fall objects far enough from the edge of the higher level so that those objects would not go over the edge if they were accidentally displaced; or, - (3) Barricade the area to which objects could fall, prohibit employees from entering the barricaded area, and keep objects that may fall far enough away from the edge of a higher level so that those objects would not go over the edge if they were accidentally displaced.

Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Division Division 2 - (A) Separate buildings shall be built of at least noncombustible construction. Windows and doors shall be located so as to be readily accessible in case of emergency. Windows shall be of glass or plastic in metal frames. - (B) Adequate ventilation to the outdoors shall be provided. Inlet openings shall be located near the floor in exterior walls only. Outlet openings shall be located at the high point of the room in exterior walls or roof. Inlet and outlet openings shall each have minimum total area of 1 square foot per 1,000 cubic feet of room volume. Discharge from outlet openings shall be directed or conducted to a safe location. - (C) Explosion venting shall be provided in exterior walls or roof only. The venting area shall be equal to not less than 1 square foot per 30 cubic feet of room volume and may consist of any one or any combination of the following: Walls of light, noncombustible material, preferably single thickness, single strength glass; lightly fastened hatch covers; lightly fastened swinging doors in exterior walls opening outward; lightly fastened walls or roof designed to relieve at a maximum pressure of 25 pounds per square foot. - (D) There shall be no sources of ignition from open flames, electrical equipment, or heating equipment. - (E) Electrical equipment shall be in accordance with Subpart S of this part for Class I, Division 2 locations. - (F) Heating, if provided, shall be by steam, hot water, or other indirect means. - (iii) Special rooms. - (A) Floor, walls, and ceiling shall have a fire-resistance rating of at least 2 hours. - (c) The use of any machinery, tool, material, or equipment that is not in compliance with any applicable requirement of the standards of part 3 of this subtitle is prohibited. ## Open-top Bins, Hoppers, Vats and Pits - 2.6 (1) Where an employee has access to an open-top bin, hopper, vat, pit or other open-top enclosure from a point directly above the enclosure, the enclosure shall be - (a) covered with a grating, screen or other covering that will prevent the employee from falling into the enclosure; or - (b) provided with a walkway that is not less than 500 mm wide and is fitted with highly visible guardrails. - (2) The grating, screen, covering or walkway shall be designed, constructed and maintained so that it will support a load that is not less than the greater of - (a) the maximum load that may be brought to bear on it, and - (b) a live load of 6 kPa. - (3) Where an employee is working above an open-top bin, hopper, vat, pit or other open-top enclosure that is not covered with a grating, screen or other covering, the inside wall of the enclosure shall be fitted with a fixed ladder, except where the operations carried on in the enclosure make such a fitting impracticable. - (4) Every enclosure referred to in subsection ( 1 ) whose walls extend less than 1.1 m above an adjacent floor or platform used by employees shall be - (a) covered with a grating, screen or other covering; - (b) fitted with a highly visible guardrail; or - (c) guarded by a person in order to prevent employees from falling into the enclosure. The standard calls for the control of accumulations of flammable and combustible waste materials. - It is the intent of this standard to ensure that hazardous accumulations of combustible waste materials are controlled so that a fast developing fire, rapid spread of toxic smoke, or an explosion will not occur. This does not necessarily mean that each room has to be swept each day. Employers and employees should be aware of the hazardous properties of materials in their workplaces, and the degree of hazard each poses. Certainly, oil soaked rags have to be treated differently than general paper trash in office areas. However, large accumulations of waste paper or corrugated boxes, etc., can pose a significant fire hazard. Accumulations of materials which can cause large fires or generate dense smoke that are easily ignited or may start from spontaneous combustion, are the types of materials with which this standard is concerned. Such combustible materials may be easily ignited by matches, welder's sparks, cigarettes, and similar low level energy ignition sources. - (5) Maintenance of equipment under the fire prevention plan . Certain equipment is often installed in workplaces to control heat sources or to detect fuel leaks. An example is a temperature limit switch often found on deep-fat food fryers found in restaurants. There may be similar switches for high temperature dip tanks, or flame failure and flashback arrester devices on furnaces and similar heat producing equipment. If these devices are not properly maintained or if they become inoperative, a definite fire hazard exists. Again employee

order to prevent workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities. At minimum, inspections shall be in accordance with this schedule: - (1) Projects employing one (1) to ninety-nine (99) persons, at any single moment in the work day, shall have an employee assigned to make at least one inspection each workday; - (2) Projects employing one hundred (100) to one hundred ninety-nine (199) persons shall have two employees assigned, each to make at least one inspection each work day; and - (3) Projects employing two hundred (200) or more persons shall have one additional designated employee for each three hundred (300) persons above one hundred ninety-nine (199) each to make at least one inspection each workday. Exception: Projects employing less than three (3) persons, need not comply with subsection (c). - (c) Written records of the daily safety and health inspections shall be kept on the project site for review by the director for the duration of the project. Inspection records shall include, at minimum, the following: - (1) The date and start time of the inspection; - (2) The name of the employee conducting the inspection; - (3) The scope (project areas) of the inspection, including the names of all contractors and subcontractors covered by the scope of the inspection; - (4) A brief description of all potential and actual hazards noted during the inspection; - (5) Name and title of the person responsible for correcting the identified hazards noted during the inspection; - (6) Information regarding how the hazard was eliminated, corrected, or abated including the inspector's recommendations for preventing the recurrence of the hazards. - (d) Warning signs shall be posted prohibiting unauthorized persons from operating potentially

## Part 12 General Safety Precautions ## Housekeeping 185 An employer must ensure that a work site is kept clean and free from materials or equipment that could cause workers to slip or trip. ## Lighting 186 (1) An employer must ensure that lighting at a work site is sufficient to enable work to be done safely. 186 (2) An employer must ensure that a light source above a working or walking surface is protected against damage. - 186 (3) An employer must ensure that there is emergency lighting at a work site if workers are in danger if the normal lighting system fails. - 186 (4) Emergency lighting must generate enough light so that workers can - (a) leave the work site safely, - (b) start the necessary emergency shut-down procedures, and - (c) restore normal lighting. ## Pallets and storage racks 187 (1) An employer must ensure that pallets used to transport or store materials or containers are loaded, moved, stacked, arranged and stored in a manner that does not create a danger to workers. - 187 (2) An employer must ensure that racks used to store materials or equipment - (a) are designed, constructed and maintained to support the load placed on them, and - (b) are placed on firm foundations that can support the load. - 187 (3) A worker must report any damage to a storage rack to an employer as quickly as practicable. - 187 (4) The employer and the workers at a work site must take all reasonable steps to prevent storage racks from being damaged to the extent that their integrity as structures is compromised. ## Placement of roofing materials - 187.1 (1) An employer must ensure that supplies and roofing materials stored on the roof of a residential building under construction are located not less than 2 metres from a roof edge. - 187.1 (2) An employer must ensure that the weight of supplies and roofing materials referred to in subsection (1) is uniformly distributed.

Division 2 - (i) Opening. Doors shall not open directly on or block a flight of stairs, and shall swing in the direction of exit travel. - (ii) Identification. Exits shall be located and identified in a manner that affords ready exit from all work areas. - (iii) Swinging doors. All swinging doors shall be provided with windows; with one window for each section of double swinging doors. Illumination shall be provided and designed to supply adequate general and local lighting to rooms, buildings, and work areas during the time of use. - (ii) Effectiveness. Factors upon which the adequacy and effectiveness of illumination will be judged, include the following: - (A) The quantity of light in foot-candle intensity shall be sufficient for the work being done. - (B) The quality of the light shall be such that it is free from glare, and has correct direction, diffusion, and distribution. - (C) Shadows and extreme contrasts shall be avoided or kept to a minimum. - (10) Reserved. - (11) Hazard marking. Physical hazard marking shall be as specified in 1910.144 of this part.

Sections 2.3-2.5 - (3) Where a door or gate that is to remain open extends into a passageway for a distance that will reduce the effective width of the passageway to a width less than that required by the National Building Code, - (a) an attendant shall be posted near the open door or gate; or - (b) a highly visible barricade shall be placed across the passageway before the door or gate is opened to prevent persons from using the passageway while the door or gate is open. ## 29 CFR 1926 (OSHA) - (ii) Be provided with rest platforms at 12 foot (3.7 m) maximum vertical intervals; - (iii) Have a minimum step width of 16 inches (41 cm), except that mobile scaffold stairway-type ladders shall have a minimum step width of 11 Ú inches (30 cm); and 1 2 - (iv) Have slip-resistant treads on all steps and landings. - (4) Stairtowers (scaffold stairway/towers) shall be positioned such that their bottom step is not more than 24 inches (61 cm.) above the scaffold supporting level. - (i) A stairrail consisting of a toprail and a midrail shall be provided on each side of each scaffold stairway. - (ii) The toprail of each stairrail system shall also be capable of serving as a handrail, unless a separate handrail is provided. - (iii) Handrails, and toprails that serve as handrails, shall provide an adequate handhold for employees grasping them to avoid falling. - (iv) Stairrail systems and handrails shall be surfaced to prevent injury to employees from punctures or lacerations, and to prevent snagging of clothing. - (v) The ends of stairrail systems and handrails shall be constructed so that they do not constitute a projection hazard. - (vi) Handrails, and toprails that are used as handrails, shall be at least 3 inches (7.6 cm) from other objects. - (vii) Stairrails shall be not less than 28 inches (71 cm) nor more than 37 inches (94 cm) from the upper surface of the stairrail to the surface of the tread, in line with the face of the riser at the forward edge of the tread. - (viii) A landing platform at least 18 inches (45.7 cm) wide by at least 18 inches (45.7 cm) long shall be provided at each level. - (ix) Each scaffold stairway shall be at least 18 inches (45.7 cm) wide between stairrails. - (x) Treads and landings shall have slip-resistant surfaces. - (xi) Stairways shall be installed between 40 degrees and 60 degrees from the horizontal. - (xii) Guardrails meeting the requirements of paragraph (g)(4) of this section shall be provided on the op
