# RIGGING SAFETY Date Published: 05/15/2025 # Rigging Safety It is crucial to properly rig and secure loads as poorly rigged loads may become unbalanced and fall, causing severe consequences. Additionally, rigging hardware may fail under excessive loads, which can also be catastrophic. Certain training and experience are required to rig a load. A qualified rigger is necessary during any hoisting activity used for the assembly or disassembly of a crane. They are also required whenever a worker is engaged in hooking, unhooking, guiding a load, or making an initial connection of a load to a component or structure within the fall zone. Note: Fall zone means the area (including but not limited to the area directly beneath the load) in which it is reasonably foreseeable that partially or completely suspended materials could fall in the event of an accident. ## WHAT IS RIGGING? to Rigging is the process of fastening a load to a lifting device, such as a crane. In order to rig a load properly, riggers need to be able to make calculations determine the weight of the load and the best method to use for rigging it. This may involve using ropes, chains, slings, shackles, lifting attachments, or other equipment. To prevent dangerous movement of the load during transportation, a tagline may be used to control it. # Securing loads ## Explain dangers If a load isn't properly secured on your vehicle, it can severely injure you during loading and unloading. Risk factors for operators when securing loads include the following: - Overexertion injuries - Being struck by parts of the load - Slips and falls-either when working at heights or from the ground due to ice, snow, and rain. Here are two examples of actual workplace incidents: 1. Strapping loads - A flatbed driver was strapping a load of steel from the side of a flat-bed truck. While pulling and turning the strap wheel, the driver felt a sudden pain in his right shoulder-a musculoskeletal injury. This injury required therapy and days off work. 2. Unstrapping loads - A worker was killed by a falling pipe when unloading a transport trailer. The worker was in the process of unstrapping the load when three high-density polyethylene pipes, weighing about 500 kg each, rolled off the top tier. Although the pipes were resting on dunnage, it failed to secure the load once the strap was removed. If a load isn't properly secured, it can cause major problems during transportation. Studies have found that up to 25% of unsafe highway incidents were caused by cargo not secured properly on trucks and vehicles. ## Identify controls There are many methods and materials available to secure loads and cargo on vehicles and intermodal containers. These methods can include: • Strapping (steel, polyester, nylon, and polypropylene) - Fasteners (nails and bolts) - Dunnage - Lashing (ropes, cables, wires, and chains). To prevent injuries, follow proper work practices to secure loads. • Workers and independent operators should be trained to recognize the danger to themselves and the public from materials becoming dislodged. - All loads must be secured to comply with Ontario's Highway Traffic Act (s. 111) and the National Safety Code Cargo Securement Standard. • Workers should wear comfortable boots with anti-slip resistance. -

He worked for his employer, a sheet metal roofing manufacturer, for 23 years. His duties included delivering roofing materials to construction sites. REPORT DATE: January 8, 2024 INCIDENT DATE: March 23, 2023 The driver was at a residential construction site where he was delivering roofing materials with a flatbed trailer. The materials consisted of metal sheets bundled in three 56-foot long wood crates and a few smaller crates. The three long, heavier crates were on the driver's side of the trailer. WORKER: 63 years old Location (x) where truck driver was crushed by crate that was pushed off the trailer by a forklift on the other side. ## INDUSTRY: Normally, the driver used his own forklift to unload freight, but the longer load left no room on the trailer to bring it. Instead, he asked construction workers at the site if they could use their company's telehandler forklift to unload the trailer for him. A lead carpenter operated the forklift assisted by spotters at each end of the trailer. They unloaded the smaller crates first from the passenger side of the trailer. The driver then directed the forklift operator to lift two of the longer crates at one time from the same side so he could pull the truck forward from under them. He left the workers and went to the driver's side of the trailer to put cargo straps into the underbody toolbox. As the operator began to lift the crates, the third crate was inadvertently pushed off the driver's side of the trailer.
