We do not permit lifting of loads using the bucket teeth of an excavator or by hanging rigging across the bucket. But we often use the excavator lifting point, a hook mounted on the bucket, to lift loads around the site. Create a Safe Work Practice (SWP) for lifting loads with the lifting point of an excavator bucket. Include all the usual requirements for safe lifting as they pertain to rigging and lifting device condition. One of the main concerns is that the hook, regularly makes contact with the earth, during digging and other excavator operations, so we cannot guarantee the condition of the hook beyond a good visual inspecting. Even NDT testing would be invalid if the hook were to be used in a digging capacity and made contact with the earth.

1\. Scope


This safe work practice (SWP) outlines the procedures for the safe use of excavator bucket lifting points for rigging and lifting operations. 2\. Definitions

The employer must use at least one qualified rigger to perform the rigging during hoisting activities for assembly, disassembly, or re-configuration work; Whenever employees are engaged in hooking, unhooking, or guiding a load, or in the initial connection of a load to a component or structure. Rated Load The maximum load a component or piece of equipment is designed to handle. An employer or contractor shall not require or permit the operator of a hoist, crane or lifting device to raise any load that is greater than the rated load determined by the manufacturer of the equipment or a professional engineer for the conditions in which the equipment is to be operated. Rigging Hardware Equipment such as shackles, links, rings, swivels, and hooks used to connect the load to the lifting device. [1]

3\. Responsibilities

New formwork is extremely slippery by design to prevent concrete from sticking to it and loses its non-stick qualities with use; the formwork that struck the victim was new and had never been used before. WAC 296-155-[redacted postal code] Close proximity lifting magnets. (1) Close proximity lifting magnets must be constructed in accordance with ASME B30.20-2010, Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices. 117 Rated load 13‑8(1) An employer or contractor shall not require or permit the operator of a hoist, crane or lifting device to raise any load that is greater than the rated load determined by the manufacturer of the equipment or a professional engineer for the conditions in which the equipment is to be operated. (2) An employer or contractor shall not require or permit the operator of a hoist, crane or lifting device to use the hoist, crane or lifting device to raise or lower workers unless the load applied to the hoist, crane or lifting device is less than one-half of the rated load as determined pursuant to subsection (1). (3) An operator of a hoist, crane or lifting device shall not raise a load unless: (a) the operator has determined the accurate weight of the load; and (b) the load is less than the rated load for the operating conditions. 31 Dec 2020 c S-15.1 Reg 10 s13-8. Raising and lowering workers 13‑9(1) If a crane or hoist will be used to raise or lower workers, the employer or contractor shall: (a) develop and implement work practices and procedures that will provide for the safe raising and lowering of the workers; (b) train the workers in those work practices and procedures; (c) ensure that the hoisting equipment and personnel lifting unit are inspected by a competent person before use and daily when in use; and (d) ensure that the competent person records the details of the inspection in the log book. (2) An employer or contractor shall not require or permit the operator of a crane or hoist to use the crane or hoist to raise or lower workers unless: (a) the personnel lifting unit meets the requirements of subsection 12-25(1); (b) the suspension members of the personnel lifting unit are securely attached to the crane, hoist line or hook by a shackle, weldless link, ring or other secure rigging attachment; (c) there is a secondary safety device that attaches the suspension members of the personnel lifting unit to the cra

Construction has one of the highest rates of back injuries of any industry. ## Jeff's Story Jeff worked on a masonry crew at a construction site. Over the course of a day, Jeff and his crew moved 200 30-pound bags of concrete from the delivery location to the work area by hand because they thought it would take less time than finding a cart or forklift to do the job. His back began to bother him, but he wrote it off to just being part of the job. The next day the pain became so bad that he had to leave work and see his doctor.
