As waste recycling coordinator positions continue to evolve with the green building industry, there is a lot of opportunity for trade collaboration and coordination between waste recycling and safety supervision. ## MATERIAL HANDLING If materials are separated at the source of installation, removed without mixing with trash and placed into the proper recycling bin there is less exposure to injury. If materials get mixed onsite it means more time is spent separating materials down at the recycling bin which puts workers at a greater risk of injury. If the site is limited on space and does not have room for source separated bins, commingled recycling bins can reduce time spent handling materials. If the commingled bins are not contaminated with trash there will be no need for people to enter the dumpster to sort out materials that should not be in the bin. If materials are big and heavy use the proper equipment to get them into the bin rather than trying to overexert yourself by placing them in by hand. Proactive material handling is key to a safe recycling effort. ## OVEREXERTION Added material handling time can lead to overexertion. Some materials are heavy and hard to hoist into the bin. ## ACCESS If materials do need to be sorted in the bin or the bin needs to be compacted it is important that there is a safe and secure access point for entering the bin and caution is taken for sharp objects that could cause an impalement. What is hazardous waste? ## What are some basic tips for waste management? DO - Seek information and advice from your local municipality regarding recycling, reusing, composting, litter control, waste disposal and environmental standards. - Minimize potential for environmental damage (e.g., do not pour chemicals down the drain, on the ground, into storm sewers; recycle or compost trash as much as possible; etc.). - Follow approved procedures from local municipality and environmental agencies for the disposal of unwanted or waste chemical products. - Minimize waste by composting vegetation waste. - Recycle all possible products (e.g., paper, glass, metal, plastic, etc.) whenever possible. See the OSH Answers document Infectious Waste for information about the safe handling of infectious waste. ## DO NOT - Do not mix hazardous waste with general waste materials. - Do not burn any material, unless permitted by local bylaws. Many Canadian communities have developed bylaws that do not allow open burning, or that restrict the types of materials that can be open-burned. # FIRE PREVENTION Date Posted: 09/14/2016 When workers think of fire prevention, they often think of fire extinguishers and having them close by to prevent a larger fire. When fire prevention is done right, it eliminates the need of a fire extinguisher. ## STORAGE OF FLAMMABLES Store flammable liquids in a secure storage container Oily or used rags, flammable or hazardous wastes, such as caustics, acids, harmful dusts or similar materials are to be disposed of into flammable storage containers with covers. More than 25 gallons of flammable liquids must be stored in an approved cabinet ## YOU MUST KNOW • The location of the fire extinguisher nearest to your work area • The limitations and proper use of A, B, C, and D type fire extinguishers • Which type of fire extinguisher you should use on each type of fire. Using the wrong extinguisher (e.g., water on burning oil) can cause a fire to spread ## FIRE EXTINGUISHERS • Fire extinguishers are to be accessible and visible within 100 feet • Fire extinguisher, rated not less than 2A, shall be provided for each 3,000 square feet of a combustible building area. • A 2A rated fire extinguisher should be provided for each floor • A 10B rated fire extinguisher shall be provided within 50 feet whenever more than 5 gallons of flammable liquids or 5 pounds of flammable gas are being used on the jobsite. • All fire extinguishers must be visually inspected monthly and must receive an annual maintenance check. Keep records of all annual maintenance reports and make available upon request. Make sure that a hydrostatic test is conducted per WAC 296-24-[redacted postal code]. ## IN CASE OF FIRE • Warn others and yell for help if required. • Use the proper fire extinguisher if the fire is small. • Always call 911 or your local emergency number. There are a number of parallels between safety supervision and construction activity pollution prevention that can make a jobsite and the surrounding community safer.
