Legal requirements for women's restroom facilities in the workplace, according to safety regulations and occupational health standards, include providing separate facilities for each sex when a certain number of employees are present. These facilities must be maintained, kept clean, and accessible. The specific number of facilities required often depends on the total number of employees. [2] [4] [6]

Here are some specific requirements:

  • Separate Facilities: When 10 or more persons are employed, the employer shall provide separate washrooms and toilet facilities for each sex with a locking device on the inside.
  • If there are more than 10 workers and both male and female persons are employed at any time, separate toilet facilities for workers of each sex in numbers that are proportionate to the numbers of male and female persons employed.
  • Where toilet rooms will be occupied by no more than one person at a time, can be locked from the inside, and contain at least one water closet, separate toilet rooms for each sex need not be provided.

[1] [2] [3] Minimum number of facilities required based on number of employees:

  • 1 to 15 employees: 1 toilet
  • 16 to 35 employees: 2 toilets
  • 36 to 55 employees: 3 toilets
  • 56 to 80 employees: 4 toilets
  • 81 to 110 employees: 5 toilets
  • 111 to 150 employees: 6 toilets
  • Over 150 employees: 1 additional for each additional 40 employees or fraction hereof.

[7] Other requirements include:

  • Toilet facilities must be kept clean and in good working order.
  • An adequate supply of toilet paper shall be provided for every water closet.
  • Facilities should be within 200 feet of locations at which workers are regularly employed and should not be more than one floor-to-floor flight of stairs from working areas.
  • Privacy, heat, light, and ventilation must be provided.
  • Where reasonable in the circumstances, at least one facility at the project shall be for the use of female workers only, where the minimum number of toilets required at a project is five or more.
  • If the facility is intended for use by female workers, there shall be a disposal receptacle for menstrual products.
