Purpose: This checklist is designed to ensure the safety of workers during demolition activities by addressing key safety requirements and procedures.
Instructions: Use this checklist before, during, and after demolition work to ensure all safety measures are in place. Mark each item as complete or incomplete and note any corrective actions needed.
Pre-Demolition Checks
- [ ] Competent Worker in Charge: Ensure a competent worker is designated to oversee the demolition work at all times [1].
- [ ] Survey Structural Integrity: Conduct a survey of the building for structural integrity before starting demolition [2].
- [ ] Remove Hazardous Substances: Ensure all chemical and biological substances are removed from the structure [1].
- [ ] Disconnect Utilities: Confirm all utilities are disconnected and written confirmation is available on-site [1].
- [ ] Remove Glass and Windows: Remove all glass and windows on exterior walls adjacent to public walkways [3].
During Demolition
- [ ] Enclose Materials Chute: Ensure materials chutes at angles greater than 45 degrees are fully enclosed [1].
- [ ] Prevent Entry to Drop Zones: Ensure workers cannot enter areas where materials are dropped or conveyed [1].
- [ ] Use of Explosives: If using explosives, ensure a competent person develops a safe demolition procedure [1].
- [ ] Floor-by-Floor Demolition: Perform demolition floor by floor from the top down if workers are present [3].
- [ ] Secure Structural Members: Ensure structural members being removed are not under stress and are secured [3].
Post-Demolition Checks
- [ ] Stability of Remaining Structures: Ensure no walls or parts of the building are left unstable [3].
- [ ] Debris Accumulation: Prevent accumulation of materials or debris that could cause collapse [3].
Equipment and Environment
- [ ] Location of Equipment: Ensure temporary offices and toolboxes are outside the range of falling materials [1].
- [ ] Ground Stability: Avoid performing demolition work at the base of the machine to prevent instability [2].
- [ ] Safety Distance: Maintain a minimum distance of 10 meters from demolition tools [4].
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- [ ] Wear Required PPE: Ensure all workers wear appropriate protective equipment, including helmets, gloves, and eye protection [4].

<!-- image --> Serious injury or death could occur from the demolition of pipes, vessels, tanks or other containers that may contain gas, flammable materials or hazardous chemicals. Do not perform any demolition work on these items until all of their contents have been removed. Follow all regulations for the removal and disposal of these materials. ## NOTICE Using the demolition tool to level the work site or push over standing structures may damage the machine or the demolition tool. Use appropriate equipment to do site preparation or maintenance operations. ## NOTICE To avoid structural damage to the machine, do not break road surfaces by placing the cutting edge of the hydraulic shear on the ground and moving the machine. Be sure that no one is near the work tool to prevent injury. Keep the work tool under control at all times to prevent injury. When a demolition tool is used, all personnel must maintain a minimum distance of 10 m (33 ft). Close all windows. Make sure that all required guards are in place. Wear all required protective equipment. Follow the instructions in the Operation and Maintenance Manual for the work tool. ## Crusher Operation (If Equipped) <!-- image --> Improper operation and maintenance of the crusher could cause personal injury or death. Observe the following procedures for safe operation of the crusher. Consult your Cat dealer for more information on the operation and maintenance of the crusher. Do not operate the host machine with the work tool unless you have read and understood the instructions and warnings in the Operation and Maintenance Manual.
