## CAUTION Hazardous Working Environment This equipment is used off the ground in high or dangerous places. Anyone using this equipment is exposed to a hazardous working environment. Users must be properly trained in the use and rigging of this equipment and be familiar with all applicable local, state, and federal codes; safety rules and regulations pertaining to single and two-point suspension scaffolding; general safety and health provisions; and personal protective and lifesaving equipment. Guardrails, midrails, and toeboards shall be used as required by local, state, and federal regulations. Their use is recommended in all cases. The working surface shall be level at all times. This equipment should not be used by persons affected by (but not limited to) the following: ill health, not of sound mind or body, under the influence of alcohol or drugs, acrophobia, arachnophobia, epilepsy, fainting spells, suicidal tendency, despondency, or prone to accidents. Safety lines and harnesses shall be used in accordance with federal and state law. ## 1926.21 Safety Training and Education - (a) General requirements. The Secretary shall, pursuant to Section 107(f) of the ACT, establish and supervise programs for the education and training of employers and employees in the recognition, avoidance and prevention of unsafe conditions in employments covered by the act. - (b) Employer Responsibility. - 1. ## Bracing and supports - 154 (1) An employer at a project shall ensure that - (a) work is completed on any component designed to support or give added support to a part of the project before proceeding with any work that adds to the load on that part; - (b) a free standing wall of brick, concrete blocks or similar materials greater than 2 m in height is braced from both sides until the wall is attached to a rigid structure and the mortar has set adequately; - (c) a free standing wall or structure designed to support roof components or any load is braced in an adequate manner to prevent collapse of the wall or structure; and - (d) a column is erected in an adequate manner to prevent collapse of the column and, where further support is required to ensure that the column does not collapse, braced in an adequate manner. - (2) An employer at a project shall use bracing or shoring for support beneath floor levels where concrete is being poured. - (3 ) An employer at a project shall - (a) ensure that bracing or shoring is designed by an engineer and is erected, maintained and dismantled in accordance with the engineer's certified specifications; or - (b) retain the bracing or shoring at all floor levels beneath the floor where concrete is being poured until the removal of the bracing or shoring is authorized in writing by an engineer. - (4) An employer shall ensure that any bracing or shoring referred to in this Section complies with the latest version of CSA standard CSA S.269.1, 'Falsework for Construction Purposes.' - 155 Where a project may cause a hazard to a pedestrian or other person at or near the workplace, an employer shall take adequate precautions to ensure the safety of the pedestrian or other person at or near the workplace. ## Construction work in compressed air - 156 An employer shall ensure that construction work in compressed air is conducted in accordance with the latest version of CSA standard CSA-Z275.3, 'Occupational Safety Code for Work in Compressed Air Environments'. - (iv) A registered professional engineer has approved the determination that such excavation work will not pose a hazard to employees. - (3) Sidewalks, pavements, and appurtenant structure shall not be undermined unless a support system or another method of protection is provided to protect employees from the possible collapse of such structures. - (j) Protection of employees from loose rock or soil. ## Restraining hoses and piping - 188 (1) An employer must ensure that a hose or piping and its connections operating under pressure are restrained if workers could be injured by its movement if it fails or if it is disconnected. - 188 (2) Despite subsection (1), if a hose or piping and its connections operating at a working pressure of 2000 kilopascals or more cannot be restrained, in order to prevent a failure that could injure workers, an employer must ensure that the hose or piping and its connections are designed, installed, used, inspected and maintained - (a) in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications, or - (b) in accordance with specifications certified by a professional engineer. - 188 (3) Subsection (1) does not apply to properly maintained fire hoses used by competent workers. ## Securing equipment and materials - 189 If a worker may be injured if equipment or material is dislodged, moved, spilled or damaged, both the employer and the worker must take all reasonable steps to ensure the equipment or material is contained, restrained or protected to eliminate the potential danger. ## Skeleton structures - 190 (1) An employer must ensure that the erection drawings and procedures for a project that includes connecting the structural parts of a skeleton structure are prepared and certified by a professional engineer. - 190 (2) The erection drawings and procedures referred to in subsection (1) must - (a) show the sequence in which the structure is to be erected, - (b) show the horizontal and vertical placement of base structures and footings, and - (c) ensure that the structure is stable during assembly. - 190 (3) If the erection procedures referred to in subsection (1) must be changed because of site conditions or unanticipated loads on the skeleton structure, the employer must ensure that the changed, additional or alternative procedures are prepared and certified by a professional engineer before they are implemented. - 190 (4) An employer mus…

<!-- image --> ## CODE OF SAFE PRACTICES FOR ADJUSTABLE SUSPENDED SCAFFOLDS It shall be the responsibility of all users to read and comply with the following common-sense guidelines which are designed to promote safety in the erecting, dismantling, and use of adjustable suspended scaffolds. These guidelines do not purport to be all-inclusive nor to supplant or replace other additional safety and precautionary measures. If these guidelines conflict with any local, provincial, state, federal or other government regulations, the regulations shall supersede these guidelines and it shall be the responsibility of each user to comply therewith. ## I. GENERAL GUIDELINES - A. POST THESE SAFE PRACTICES in a conspicuous place. Be sure that all persons who erect, use, relocate or dismantle adjustable suspended scaffold systems are fully aware of them. Use them in toolbox safety meetings. - B. FOLLOW ALL EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDATIONS as well as all local, provincial, state , and federal codes, ordinances, and regulations relating to adjustable suspended scaffold systems. - C. SURVEY THE JOB SITE. A competent person shall survey the job site for hazards such as exposed electrical wires, obstructions, and unguarded roof edges or openings. - D. INSPECT ALL EQUIPMENT BEFORE USE. Never use any equipment that is damaged or defective in any way. Mark it or tag it as damaged or defective and remove it from the job site. - E. ERECT AND DISMANTLE ADJUSTABLE SUSPENDED SCAFFOLD EQUIPMENT in accordance with the design and/or manufacturer's recommendations. - F. DO NOT ERECT, DISMANTLE OR ALTER ADJUSTABLE SUSPENDED SCAFFOLD SYSTEMS except under the supervision of a competent person. - G. DO NOT ABUSE OR MISUSE ADJUSTABLE SUSPENDED SCAFFOLD EQUIPMENT. Never overload any equipment. - H. ERECTED ADJUSTABLE SUSPENDED SCAFFOLDS ARE TO BE INSPECTED REGULARLY by the user to be sure that they are maintained in a safe condition.
