Lockout/Tagout is used to control hazardous energy, preventing equipment from being energized during repairs or maintenance. Lockout is the preferred method - and the only truly protective one. First, turn off the energy isolating device. Then, use a keyed lock to lock out the energy isolating device. The best way is one worker, one lock, one key. This practice is actually stronger than the OSHA standard. Under the one worker, one lock, one key system: - Each worker needs one lock for each energy source. For example, if there are three different energy sources on a machine, each worker would need three locks. - Multiple workers can use a hardened hasp called a scissors to allow multiple locks. • Each worker needs to remove his/her own lock when servicing work is completed. Tagout is sometimes used, but it should only be used when machines or equipment can't be locked out. Sometimes, as with older equipment, equipment can't be locked out.
