Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Division - (iv) Nonslip floors. Floors, footwalks, and passageways in the work area around machines or other places where a person is required to stand or walk shall be provided with effective means to minimize slipping. - (4) Walkways, docks, and platforms. - (i) Width. Walkways, docks, and platforms shall be of sufficient width to provide adequate passage and working areas. - (ii) Maintenance. Walkways shall be evenly floored and kept in good repair. - (iii) Docks. Docks and runways used for the operation of lift trucks and other vehicles shall have a substantial guard or shear timber except where loading and unloading are being performed. - (iv) Elevated walks. All elevated walks, runways, or platforms, if 4 feet or more from the floor level, shall be provided with a standard railing except on loading or unloading sides of platforms. If height exceeds 6 feet, a standard toeboard also shall be provided to prevent material from rolling or falling off. - (v) Elevated platforms. Where elevated platforms are used routinely on a daily basis they shall be equipped with stairways or fixed ladders that comply with Subpart D of this part. - (vi) Hazardous locations. Where required, walkways and stairways with standard handrails shall be provided in elevated and hazardous locations. Where such passageways are over walkways or work areas, standard toeboards shall be provided. - (5) Stairways. - (i) Construction. Stairways shall be constructed in accordance with Subpart D of this part. - (ii) Handrails. Stairways shall be provided with a standard handrail on at least one side or on any open side. Where stairs are more than 4 feet wide there shall be a standard handrail at each side, and where more than 8 feet wide, a third standard handrail shall be erected in the center of the stairway. - (iii) Lighting. reason except for weather or climatic conditions, an employer shall ensure that devices such as matting or grating are used, where necessary, to prevent slipping and, if such devices are inadequate to prevent slipping, that non-slip footwear is worn by employees. Subsection 139(2) amended: O.I.C. 2000-130, N.S. Reg. 52/2000. - (3) Where a floor, stairway, passageway or similar walking surface at or near a workplace becomes slippery as a result of weather or climatic conditions, an employer shall ensure that the floor, stairway, passageway or similar walking surface is kept free from falling or slipping hazards by removing ice, snow or water, to the extent reasonably practicable, and using materials such as ashes, sand, salt, or other measures where appropriate to prevent slipping or falling. ## Access and exit - 140 (1) An employer shall provide a safe means of access to and exit from all work areas. - (2) An employer shall provide adequate information to ensure that every person in the workplace is able to exit the workplace in a safe manner in the event of an emergency. - (3) An employer shall provide overhead protection at every means of access to and exit from a building, structure or project where there is a hazard of falling material that may injure a person at or near the workplace. - (4) This Section does not apply where a firefighter is engaged in structural firefighting or rescue. - (b) guardrails and toe boards. - 314 (2) If a person removes a cover, guardrail or toe board, or any part thereof, protecting an opening or hole for any reason, an employer must ensure a temporary cover or other means of protection replaces it immediately. - 314 (3) If a temporary cover is used to protect an opening or hole, an employer must ensure a warning sign or marking clearly indicating the nature of the hazard - (a) is posted near or fixed on the cover, and - (b) is not removed unless another effective means of protection is immediately provided. ## Guardrails - 315 (1) An employer must ensure that a guardrail required by this Code - (a) has a horizontal top member installed between 920 millimetres and 1070 millimetres above the base of the guardrail, - (b) has a horizontal, intermediate member spaced mid-way between the top member and the base, - (c) has vertical members at both ends of the horizontal members with intermediate vertical supports that are not more than 3 metres apart at their centres, and - (d) is constructed of lumber that is 38 millimetres by 89 millimetres or of material with properties the same as or better than those of lumber. - 315 (2) Despite subsection (1), a temporary guardrail does not require a horizontal intermediate member if it has a substantial barrier positioned within the space bounded by the horizontal top member, toe board and vertical members that prevents a worker from falling through the space. - 315 (3) An employer must ensure that a guardrail is secured so that it cannot move in any direction if it is struck or if any point on it comes into contact with a worker, materials or equipment. ## Hoppers, bins and chutes - 316 If a worker can access materials in hoppers, bins or chutes, an employer must ensure the hoppers, bins or chutes have horizontal bars, screens or equally effective safeguards that prevent a worker from falling into the hoppers, bins or chutes. ## Machine failure - 317 If a worker may be injured
