Select head protection for the actual impact and electrical hazards, adjust the suspension for a secure fit, and inspect the shell and suspension before work. Retire it after a significant impact or when damaged; a hard hat reduces risk but never replaces controls that keep objects from falling.

Wear the head protection selected for today's hazards, adjust it so it stays in place, and inspect both shell and suspension before work. A hard hat sitting in the truck, riding loose, or damaged by an earlier impact cannot provide its intended protection. If it has taken a significant blow, even with no visible crack, retire it. At the same time, remember that head protection is the last layer. Secure materials, control falling objects, and keep people out of drop zones first.
The hazard is real. BLS recorded 79 fatal injuries in private construction during 2024 from workers being struck by propelled, falling, or suspended objects. That event category includes more than head injuries and does not say whether head protection was worn, so do not turn it into a claim about helmet effectiveness. It does show why falling- and flying-object controls remain essential.
Federal OSHA requires protective helmets where employees face possible head injury from impact, falling or flying objects, or electrical shock and burns. The head protection must meet one of the ANSI Z89.1 editions incorporated in 29 CFR 1926.100 or be demonstrated at least as effective. Since January 13, 2025, 29 CFR 1926.95 also explicitly requires construction PPE to be selected so it properly fits each affected employee.
Match the type and electrical class to the hazard assessment. Type I protects against blows to the top of the head. Type II protects against blows to the top and sides. Federal OSHA does not impose a universal Type II mandate on every construction task. OSHA's 2024 advisory bulletin says to consider Type II protection with a chin strap on construction sites with risks such as falling debris, equipment impacts, awkward positions, or slips and falls. Select it when the hazard assessment supports it. For electrical hazards, verify the class: Class G and Class E provide specified electrical performance, while Class C provides no electrical protection. A proof-test voltage is not permission to contact an energized conductor, and vented head protection is not for electrical work.
Fit matters. Set the suspension so the helmet sits level, comfortably snug, and does not bind, slip, or fall off. Keep the required clearance between the head and shell; do not place objects inside that space. Examine the headband, cradle, attachment points, ratchet, chin strap, and cushioning. Use a compatible chin strap where the assessment or manufacturer calls for one, especially when the helmet could be dislodged. A loose helmet or damaged suspension may not distribute force as designed.
Inspect the outer shell for cracks, dents, punctures, deformity, soft spots, chalking, fading, burns, chemical attack, or other degradation. Inspect the suspension for cuts, stretched webbing, fraying, damaged clips, or loss of adjustment. Verify that the manufacturer and certification labels remain legible. Only wear a helmet backward if it carries the manufacturer's reverse-wearing mark. Use only manufacturer-approved accessories and attachments; drilling holes, using unapproved paint or solvents, or mixing incompatible suspension parts can compromise protection.
There is no single federal calendar date at which every hard hat must be replaced. Follow the manufacturer's service-life and storage instructions because heat, sunlight, chemicals, handling, and use affect life. Replace or retire head protection immediately after a significant impact, even if damage is invisible, and whenever inspection finds damage or degradation. Replace a worn suspension only with an approved compatible component. Store it clean and dry, away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature, and chemicals, not on a vehicle dashboard or rear shelf.
Today, look above and around the work: overhead crews, scaffolds, hoisting, stored material, projecting steel, low clearance, and electrical exposure. Eliminate or control those hazards and establish drop zones. Then confirm that every worker has the correct type, class, fit, and condition. Report any impact or defect instead of quietly returning the helmet to the rack.
Incident example
Documented incident — OSHA Accident Summary 14499842: In an OSHA-investigated construction incident on March 17, 1987, an approximately 10-pound piece of angular limestone became dislodged inside a deep vertical shaft and fell roughly 40 to 70 feet before striking a worker's head. The worker was wearing a hard hat, but OSHA reported that it did not provide sufficient protection from such a large, heavy falling object. No wire mesh or other restraining material had been installed to stop rock from falling after blasting, and the worker suffered massive head trauma. This case demonstrates a hard hat's limitation: it cannot substitute for securing material, installing overhead protection, conducting an effective post-blast inspection, or excluding workers from a fall zone. Controls to cover
Eliminate falling-object exposure by securing materials and tools, using required screens, toeboards, or canopies, sequencing overhead work, and controlling drop zones.

Do not drill, improperly paint, chemically clean, reverse-wear, or add accessories unless the manufacturer approves that use.
