## Part 12 General Safety Precautions ## Housekeeping 185 An employer must ensure that a work site is kept clean and free from materials or equipment that could cause workers to slip or trip. ## Lighting 186 (1) An employer must ensure that lighting at a work site is sufficient to enable work to be done safely. 186 (2) An employer must ensure that a light source above a working or walking surface is protected against damage. - 186 (3) An employer must ensure that there is emergency lighting at a work site if workers are in danger if the normal lighting system fails. - 186 (4) Emergency lighting must generate enough light so that workers can - (a) leave the work site safely, - (b) start the necessary emergency shut-down procedures, and - (c) restore normal lighting. ## Pallets and storage racks 187 (1) An employer must ensure that pallets used to transport or store materials or containers are loaded, moved, stacked, arranged and stored in a manner that does not create a danger to workers. - 187 (2) An employer must ensure that racks used to store materials or equipment - (a) are designed, constructed and maintained to support the load placed on them, and - (b) are placed on firm foundations that can support the load. - 187 (3) A worker must report any damage to a storage rack to an employer as quickly as practicable. - 187 (4) The employer and the workers at a work site must take all reasonable steps to prevent storage racks from being damaged to the extent that their integrity as structures is compromised. ## Placement of roofing materials - 187.1 (1) An employer must ensure that supplies and roofing materials stored on the roof of a residential building under construction are located not less than 2 metres from a roof edge. - 187.1 (2) An employer must ensure that the weight of supplies and roofing materials referred to in subsection (1) is uniformly distributed.

The lifeline shall be securely attached to substantial members of the structure (not scaffold), or to securely rigged lines, which will safely suspend the worker in case of a fall. - 11. Two-point suspension scaffolds shall be securely lashed of the building or structure to prevent them from swaying. Window cleaners' anchors shall not be used for this purpose. - 10. Where acid solutions are used, fiber ropes are not permitted unless acid-proof. ## I. Single-point adjustable suspension scaffolds. - 8. The hoisting machines, cables, and equipment shall be regularly serviced and inspected after each installation and every 30 days thereafter. - 9. The units may be combined to form a two-point suspension scaffold. Such scaffold shall comply with paragraph (g) of this section. - 10. S-15.1 REG 10 ## OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY, 2020 ## Toeboards - 9-12 (1) An employer, contractor or owner shall provide toeboards at the edge of: - (a) a permanent floor, platform, mezzanine, walkway, ramp, runway or other surface from which it is possible for materials to fall more than 1.2 metres; - (b) a temporary scaffold or work platform from which it is possible for materials to fall more than 3 metres; and - (c) a pit for a flywheel or pulley. - (2) Subsection (1) does not apply to a loading or unloading area if the employer, contractor or owner has taken other precautions to ensure that materials will not fall from the floor or other horizontal surface. - (3) If a toeboard is required by these regulations, an employer, contractor or owner shall ensure that the toeboard extends from the floor or other horizontal surface to a height of not less than: - (a) 125 millimetres from the floor or surface; or - (b) 100 millimetres from the floor or surface, in the case of a toeboard that was installed before March 13, 1986. 31 Dec 2020 c S-15.1 Reg 10 s9-12. ## Openings in floors, roofs, etc. - 9-13 (1) An employer, contractor or owner shall ensure that any opening or hole in a floor, roof or other work surface into which a worker could step or fall is: - (a) covered with a securely installed covering that is capable of supporting a load of 360 kilograms per square metre and that is provided with a warning sign or permanent marking clearly indicating the nature of the hazard; or - (b) provided with a guardrail and a toeboard. - (2) If the covering or guardrail and toeboard mentioned in subsection (1) or any part of the guardrail or toeboard is removed for any reason, an employer, contractor or owner shall immediately provide an effective alternative means of protection. 31 Dec 2020 c S-15.1 Reg 10 s9-13. ## Building shafts - 9-14 (1) An employer, contractor or owner shall ensure that a work platform that is an integral part of a slip form used…

order to prevent workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities. At minimum, inspections shall be in accordance with this schedule: - (1) Projects employing one (1) to ninety-nine (99) persons, at any single moment in the work day, shall have an employee assigned to make at least one inspection each workday; - (2) Projects employing one hundred (100) to one hundred ninety-nine (199) persons shall have two employees assigned, each to make at least one inspection each work day; and - (3) Projects employing two hundred (200) or more persons shall have one additional designated employee for each three hundred (300) persons above one hundred ninety-nine (199) each to make at least one inspection each workday. Exception: Projects employing less than three (3) persons, need not comply with subsection (c). - (c) Written records of the daily safety and health inspections shall be kept on the project site for review by the director for the duration of the project. DO NOT WORK FROM, INSTALL OR MOVE ADJUSTABLE SUSPENDED SCAFFOLDS if you are sick or impaired in any way. - P. DO NOT WORK ON ADJUSTABLE SUSPENDED SCAFFOLDS when under the influence of alcohol or drugs. - Q. DEBRIS SHOULD NOT BE STORED OR ALLOWED TO ACCUMULATE ON A PLATFORM. - R. SUPPORTING DEVICES must be capable of supporting the hoist-rated load with a safety factor of four. - 3. ALL OVERHEAD RIGGING must be secured from unwanted movement in any direction. - 4. COUNTERWEIGHTS USED WITH OUTRIGGER BEAMS must be of a non-flowable material and must be secured to the beam to prevent accidental displacement. - 5. OUTRIGGER BEAMS THAT DO NOT USE COUNTERWEIGHTS must be installed and secured to the roof structure with bolts or other direct connections. Direct connections shall be evaluated by a competent person. - 6. TIE BACK ALL TRANSPORTABLE RIGGING DEVICES. Tieback shall be equivalent in strength to the suspension ropes. - 7. INSTALL TIEBACKS AT RIGHT ANGLES TO THE FACE OF THE BUILDING and secure them without slack, to a suitable anchor capable of supporting the hoist-rated load with a safety factor of four. - 8. IN THE EVENT THAT TIEBACKS CANNOT BE INSTALLED AT RIGHT ANGLES, two tiebacks at opposing angles must be used to prevent movement. - 9. ## III. Wire rope and hardware guidelines - 1. Use only wire rope and attachments as specified by the hoisting machine manufacturer. Do not use wire rope that is kinked, birdcaged, corroded, undersized, or damaged in any way. - 2. Be sure that wire rope is long enough to reach the lowest possible landing. - 3. Clean, lubricate &amp;amp; handle wire rope in accordance with wire rope or hoist manufacturer's instructions. - 4. Coil and uncoil wire rope in accordance with the wire rope or hoist manufacturer's instruction in order to avoid kinks or damage. - 5. Use thimbles at all wire rope suspension terminations. - 6. Use J-type clamps or swaged fittings to fasten wire rope. DO NOT USE U-CLAMPS. - 7. Tighten wire rope clamps in accordance with the clamp manufacturer's instructions. - 8. Wire ropes used in traction hoists must have prepared ends in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendation. - 9. INSPECT WIRE ROPE DURING EACH ASCENT AND DESCENT. Do not expose wire rope to fire, undue heat, corrosive atmosphere, chemicals, to passage of electrical currents, or to damage by tools or handling. ## IV. Power supply guidelines - 1. BE SURE YOUR POWER SUPPLY CONFORMS TO HOIST MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDATIONS. - 2. GROUND ALL ELECTRICAL POWER SOURCES and POWER CORD CONNECTIONS. Protect with circuit breakers. - 4. Power cord or air hose connections must be restrained to prevent their separation. - 3. Use power cords or air hoses of proper size that are long enough for the job. - 5. Tie off power cords or air hoses at the suspended scaffold to prevent them from falling. - 6. Protect power cords or air hoses at sharp edges. - 7. ## Restraining hoses and piping - 188 (1) An employer must ensure that a hose or piping and its connections operating under pressure are restrained if workers could be injured by its movement if it fails or if it is disconnected. - 188 (2) Despite subsection (1), if a hose or piping and its connections operating at a working pressure of 2000 kilopascals or more cannot be restrained, in order to prevent a failure that could injure workers, an employer must ensure that the hose or piping and its connections are designed, installed, used, inspected and maintained - (a) in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications, or - (b) in accordance with specifications certified by a professional engineer. - 188 (3) Subsection (1) does not apply to properly maintained fire hoses used by competent workers. ## Securing equipment and materials - 189 If a worker may be injured if equipment or material is dislodged, moved, spilled or damaged, both the employer and the worker must take all reasonable steps to ensure the equipment or material is contained, restrained or protected to eliminate the potential danger. ## Skeleton structures - 190 (1) An employer must ensure that the erection drawings and procedures for a project that includes connecting the structural parts of a skeleton structure are prepared and certified by a professional engineer. - 190 (2) The erection drawings and procedures referred to in subsection (1) must - (a) show the sequence in which the structure is to be erected, - (b) show the horizontal and vertical placement of base structures and footings, and - (c) ensure that the structure is stable during assembly. - 190 (3) If the erection procedures referred to in subsection (1) must be changed because of site conditions or unanticipated loads on the skeleton structure, the employer must ensure that the changed, additional or alternative procedures are prepared and certified by a professional engineer before they are implemented. - 190 (4) An employer mus…
