The 120-volt machine was powered by two extension cords connected together. One cord was missing its grounding prong. The cords were plugged into a permanent electrical outlet. Bernard placed the coring machine where he wanted to make the hole. When he turned on the power, Bernard received a shock and suffered an electrical burn to his hand. *What caused this incident? *How could this have been prevented? * Have you ever been injured due to an extension cord, or do you know someone who has? # TOOLBOX TALK Cutting Water Mains ## The Problem: In 2014, three municipal employees were injured when their tool kicked back while they were cutting water mains. The tool cut their shoulders and face, and the workers required emergency medical treatment. This Toolbox Talk is intended to help you prevent similar work-related injuries. ## What You Can Do: • Select and use the safest tool possible. • Follow the owner's manual for cutting equipment. Use the surface of the tool that is designed for cutting. - Ensure that all machine guards are intact and functioning properly. Do not use damaged tools. • To maintain leverage, avoid using cutting equipment that is raised above your shoulders or while the employee is lying down. • When using circular blades, never use the kickback zone (upper quadrant) of the blade for cutting. If the blade is pinched or stalled in the kickback zone, the reactive force will push the power cutter up and back towards the user in a rotating motion causing serious or even fatal injury. • Support pipes to prevent blades from being pinched. • Protect your eyes and face with safety glasses and a faceshield. • Train employees how to use each type of cutting tool used in their department. Circular blades can kick-back. Use the proper cutting area and make sure machine guards are in place. When possible, select tools that don't have potential for kick-back. Repetitive Motion: Construction Toolbox Talk NIOSH CPWR [ Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a repetitive-motion injury. It occurs when an important nerve is regularly pinched and compressed. Workers with CTS commonly feel pain, weakness, and tingling, usually in the first three fingers of the hand and the base of the thumb. Symptoms are often most severe during sleep. Serious cases can be disabling. ## Ann's Story Ann first noticed symptoms of CTS when her fingers would tingle and her hand and wrist would begin to feel numb the longer she held a tool. She went to her doctor and explained the type of work she performed and the problems she was having holding tools. The doctor did some tests and told Ann that she had CTS. *What caused the CTS? - How could this have been prevented? *Have you ever had symptoms of CTS or do you know someone who has? If so, what happened? ## How can we stay safe today? What will we do at the worksite to prevent repetitive motions that can cause carpal tunnel syndrome? ## Remember This • Use tools designed for the job. • Use tools that keep your wrist in a neutral position, rather than a forward or backward bend, to minimize force. • Use a two-handled tool that has a spring return so the handle automatically returns to the starting position, and has a locking position if continuous force is required. • Wear gloves or use anti-vibration wraps to improve grip strength and lessen the shock of vibrating tools. • Rest your hands periodically. • Reduce repetitive movements. . Carbon Monoxide Construction Toolbox Talk NIOSH CPWR [● Poisoning All fuels, even diesel and "cleaner" fuels such as propane, create carbon monoxide. This gas is a common byproduct of any combustion process. Carbon monoxide is an invisible gas with no taste or smell. It is especially dangerous if it builds up indoors. It is just slightly lighter than air, so it can hang around in enclosed spaces. ## Nate's Story Nate was working at a large, enclosed construction site. The site did not have enough ventilation for the three machines giving off carbon monoxide: a portable mixer and a trowel powered by gasoline, and a forklift powered by propane. Nate died of carbon monoxide poisoning after he and six other workers were exposed to high levels of the gas. - What caused this incident? *How could this have been prevented? - Have you ever become sick from carbon monoxide exposure, or do you know someone who has? If so, what happened? ## How can we stay safe today? What will we do at the worksite to prevent illness or death from carbon monoxide exposure? ## Remember This • Never use any equipment powered by an internal combustion engine (such as a generator or pressure washer) indoors or in an enclosed or partially enclosed space, such as a garage, crawl space, or basement. - Before you start work, identify all potential sources of carbon monoxide exposure. • Use electric tools or tools with separate engines that can be kept outside, away from air intakes. • Tune and maintain engines and equipment regularly. • Wear a carbon monoxide monitor, which employers should provide if there is a high potential of exposure to carbon monoxide. The monitor sounds an alarm when gas levels become unsafe. • Watch for warning signs of carbon monoxide exposure: headache, faintness, dizziness, confusion, nausea, and irregular heartbeat. • Do not ignore the warning signs in yourself or others near the fuel-burning equipment.
